Exemplo:
“Tokyo is the biggest city in Japan.”
(Tóquio é a maior cidade do Japão.)
Neste exemplo, estamos comparando Tóquio com todas as outras cidades do Japão.
Superlatives - Como Formar
curtos = adiciona 'the' antest do adjetivo e 'est' no final do adjetivo
longos = adiciona 'the most' antes do adjetivo
1. Adjetivos curtos: the + adjective + -est
Por exemplo, “funny”, “tidy” and “healthy”.
Exemplos:
“Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.”
(O Monte Everest é a montanha mais alta do mundo.)
High - the highest
“John is the tallest person in his family.”
Tall - the tallest
2. Adjetivos terminados em -e: the + adjective + -st
Exemplos:
“This is the nicest hotel in the city.”
Nice - the nicest
“Which is the safest way to get there?”
Safe - the safest
Exemplos:
“Today is the hottest day of the year.”
(Hoje é o dia mais quente do ano.)
Hot - the hottest
“This is the biggest shopping centre in the area.”
(Este é o maior shopping da região.)
Big - the biggest
4. Adjetivos terminados em -y: the + adjective -y + -iest
Exemplos:
“Monday is the busiest day of the week.”
Busy - the busiest
“She is the happiest person I know.”
Happy - the happiest
5. Adjetivos longos: the most + adjective
Por exemplo, “boring”, “modern” and “honest”.
Para adjetivos longos, usamos 'the most' antes do adjetivo.
Exemplos:
“This is the most expensive restaurant in town.”
Expensive - the most expensive
“Titanic is one of the most famous films in the world.”
Famous - the most famous
Importante: não usamos -est e the most juntos.
❌ “This is the most biggest city in the country.” ❌
✅ “This is the biggest city in the country.” ✅
(Esta é a maior cidade do país.)
6. Superlatives Irregulares
Alguns adjetivos não seguem as regras anteriores. Precisamos memorizar suas formas superlativas.
Good → the best
(Bom → o melhor)
Bad → the worst
(Ruim → o pior)
Far → the furthest / the farthest
(Longe → o mais distante)
Exemplos:
“This is the best restaurant in the city.”
(Este é o melhor restaurante da cidade.)
“That was the worst film I've ever seen.”
“Who lives the furthest from this school?”
(Quem more mais longe dessa escola?)
Superlatives sem 'the'
Quando usamos um superlativo acompanhado de um possessivo, como my, your, his, her, our, their ou 's possessivo não precisamos usar the.
Exemplos:
“This is my best shirt.”
(Esta é a minha melhor camisa.)
“That's Sally's most expensive bag.”
“He is my oldest friend.”
(Ele é meu amigo mais antigo.)
